E3 2015: Nintendo Has Me at a Loss

nintendo e3 muppetsMany GeekParty staffers lost their minds over Nintendo’s E3 2015 presentation, but it left me feeling lost. I’m not the biggest Nintendo enthusiast, sure, but I am a game enthusiast. It strikes me as odd that most of the games I saw completely failed to catch my interest. I’m not sure why I just can’t drink the Kool-Aid and swallow the mushroom. [Read more…]

E3 2015: Horizon Zero Dawn Looks Pretty Fantastic

horizon zero dawnHorizon Zero Dawn, a new IP from Guerilla Studios, seems to have flown under the radar, at least in comparison to a lot of titles that are getting heavy buzzy. That’s a shame, because Horizon looks like a really cool, unique and interesting game. It reminds me a bit of Enslaved, with a dash of Heavenly Sword and a smattering of Gears of War thrown in.

The trailer is lengthy, which I appreciate. It’s heavy on exposition and setting, and even heavier on action. There are still plenty of details yet to come. Is this an open world game? Will the bulk of the gameplay consist of mechanical monster hunting? We don’t know what the finished game will look like, and that’s okay.

Until Monday, I didn’t know this game existed. Now, I’ve seen a little of what it has to offer, and I’m already happy. It helps that the trailer includes actual gameplay, not just some fancy engine-rendered work that will eventually prove to be less-than-spectacular.

Horizon Zero Dawn is definitely a game I’ll be keeping a close eye on in the months to come. For now, though, I’ll just enjoy this glorious trailer.

E3 2015: The Star Wars: Battlefront Trailer Is Far From Forceful

star wars battlefrontI wasn’t sure what to expect from Star Wars: Battlefront ‘s first gameplay trailer. I’m not a fan of the Battlefront games, but initially, I thought this title might change my mind. I was pleased to see a more laidback approach instead of the kind of massive military fights I typically associate with the series. [Read more…]

E3 2015: The New Division Trailer Has Me Divided

E3 2014 - The DivisionI continue to be optimistic about The Division. By and large, I love Tom Clancy games, and I’ve been excited by much of what I’ve seen so far. I remained onboard in spite of the constant delays, because the game genuinely looked great. In many ways, it felt like a spiritual sequel to the fantastic IO Interactive game Freedom Fighters.

But there is a limit to my optimism, and the latest trailer is starting to push it. It seems like every time Ubisoft announces a flashy new game, it eventually undergoes a massive scaling back of graphics. Unless my eyes doth deceive me, The Division appears to be no exception. [Read more…]

E3 2015: Firewatch on PS4 Has My Heart Aflame

firewatchWhen the reveal trailer for Firewatch dropped last year, I was completely intrigued. I was a little disheartened, however, when I realized it was for the PC. It’s not that I have anything against PC games; I’m just not a PC gamer. I figured it was The Stanley Parable and Gone Home all over again.

But when Campo Santo announced they were bringing Firewatch to PS4, my heart was set ablaze. I can’t wait to get my hands this mysterious, gorgeous-looking game, especially since those hands will be wrapped snug around my PS4 controller.

E3 2015: The New Hitman Trailer Is Killer

hitmanI’ve always been a huge fan of the Hitman series, even though our relationship has been somewhat tumultuous. Still, let’s be honest: Hitman: Absolution was far from great, and it didn’t provide Hitman experience we all deserved. [Read more…]

E3 2015: I’m Speechless; The Last Guardian Is Coming to PS4

the last guardian ps4Team Ico has an amazing track record, having built two of the most impossibly beautiful video games of all time. In fact, I probably don’t even have to mention the names of those games (they’re Ico and Shadow if the Colossus, by the way).

E3 2015: I Wish Ubisoft Had Interesting Games to Show

Ubi-E315-DatedI just got done watching the Ubisoft E3 2015 press conference. I have to say, in many ways I’m really impressed. They worked incredibly hard to ensure there was nothing to complain about in terms of their conference, at least in terms of the standard SJW stuff.

That’s why I wish Ubisoft actually had something of interest to show.

E3 2015: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Would Make a Great Otome Game

assassin's creed syndicateUnlike some GeekParty staffers, I’ve never been much of an Assassin’s Creed fan. I like jumping off tall building as much as the next person, sure, but its story and gameplay never managed to grab me.

But in spite of my lack of interest, I couldn’t help but find myself sucked in by Ubisoft’s new Assassin’s Creed Syndicate trailer. It’s not that I’m interested in playing the game; I’ll almost certainly ignore it. I just found myself charmed by its cast, from their accents to their fashionable ensembles. [Read more…]

E3 2015: The For Honor Trailer Has Killer Fight Choreography

for honorHere’s the thing: I’m probably not going to play For Honor. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with it — it looked pretty cool, really — it’s just  not my thing. Online kill-for-alls aren’t fun for me, even when they involve swords. I’ve only seen a few minutes of footage, so I might change my mind in the future, but I won’t be putting in pre-orders anytime soon.

But man, it had one hell of a trailer. [Read more…]
