Five Guest Characters I’d Like To See Join Mortal Kombat

kombat_pack_mkxLast week, NetherRealm unveiled their plans to add Jason Voorhees to Mortal Kombat X as part of the game’s “Kombat Pack.” At the time, we knew that the pack would include three other characters, one of which would be another guest character. It turns out we didn’t have to wait long for the second guest character to be revealed, because one week later, NetherRealm announced that the long-rumored Predator would also be joining the roster.

All in all, I’d say I’m pretty disappointed by their choices for guest characters. I’m sure they’ll both be fine additions to the game, but they just don’t do much for me. Both Jason and Predator are brutal killers — an important characteristic for a Mortal Kombat character — but they’re both lacking in personality. Mainly, they’re both mute, which bugs me.

My point is, NetherRealm could have done a lot better. To prove it, I thought up five guest kombatants that would be perfect for the Mortal Kombat roster.

1. Baird or Cole from Gears of War

baird_cole_gears_of_warI know I’m cheating by not picking just one of these guys, but you can’t split up Baird and Cole! NetherRealm is fleshing out the personality of all the MKX by adding a couple of lines of dialogue before each fight. While neither Jason nor Predator would have much to say, Baird or Cole would provide plenty of snappy one-liners.

I mean, they were pretty much were the only source of charisma in the entirety of the Gears of War series. Of course, it wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without copious amounts of blood and gore, and these Gears have that in spades thanks to their armory of weaponry. “Hammer of Dawn” much?

2. Spawn from… Spawn

spawnThe 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat took the series in a darker direction, and MKX has seemingly doubled down on this girm aesthetic. I can’t think of a single character that would fit into the MK universe more seamlessly than the infamous anti-hero, Spawn.

Seriously, any illustration you see of him pretty much looks like it could be concept art for a Mortal Kombat game. This wouldn’t even be Spawn’s first foray into the fighting game genre. I’m sure some of you will remember his appearance in the Xbox version of Soulcalibur II. He was one of my favorite characters to play in that game, so I would definitely jump at the chance to play him in a game that would let him spill a little blood — something that SCII’s “T” rating prevented him from doing the first time around.

3. Alice from American McGee’s Alice

alice_madness_returnsAmerican McGee’s Alice is a dark and twisted take on Lewis Carroll’s classic novels. Alice is pretty much just how you remember her, except now she’s wielding a butcher knife and her trademark white and blue dress is stained with blood. The games also depict her with some sharp British wit, which could make for some fun and interesting interactions between her and the various MK characters.

I’m also including Alice because women in the Mortal Kombat series tend to lack modesty when it comes to their attire. A female character who isn’t falling out of her top would be a welcome addition.

4. Ash from The Evil Dead/Army of Darkness

ash_fist_full_of_boomstickThis guy has a chainsaw for a hand and carries a shotgun — erm, sorry, “boomstick” — in the other. If that isn’t “Fatality-fuel,” then I don’t know what is. Not only is Ash more than capable of holding his own in a tournament to the death, his ability to talk trash is second-to-none. It would definitely be fun to see what he has to say to the rest of MK roster.

Bruce Campbell seems to adore playing the character, so I have no doubt he’d be willing to reprise his role for the game. Who loves ya, baby?

5. The “Macho Man” Randy Savage

macho_man_wwe2k14Who wouldn’t want to watch one of the greatest — yet criminally underrated — wrestlers of all time cave in someone’s skull with a steel chair? Or hit his patented flying elbow off the top rope through the heart of his downed opponent? Think of the possibilities! He’d probably explode, or something… I don’t know!

This seems like an amazing idea to me, and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done. I mean, truth be told, I’m kind of cheating adding him to this list, since he’s such an obvious choice. It’s really shocking he isn’t a part of the game already.

Just like the WWE Hall of Fame, it’ll take them forever before they do the right thing and finally put him where he rightfully belongs.
