Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Does Episodic Content Right

Wolf Among UsI loved the first episode of The Wolf Among Us, but by the time the second episode rolled around, I’d already forgotten most of the decisions I made. In fact, I had a hard time remembering the overall narrative at all.

Frustrated, I decided I’d just wait until all 5 episodes were released, then sit down and do one big play through. Many months later, I still plan on doing that, but I haven’t found the time.

Telltale Games The Wolf Among UsEven though I really enjoyed The Wolf Among Us, the gap between episodes was much too large. Waiting months to experience a few hours gameplay felt unreasonable.  Since each consecutive episode is very dependent upon the content that came before it, it takes a decent amount of effort to keep facts and characters and motives straight.

Weekly episodic television is able to hold the viewer’s attention because episodes are so close together. Just enough time passes to build up anticipation as you wait to see how cliffhangers will be resolved or how story lines will pan out. When you have to wait months between episodes, there’s nothing to nurture that interest, and it fades away naturally.

That’s why it’s so refreshing to see Capcom embrace episodic content that’s more in line with this television model. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has been releasing new episodes weekly, and it feels like a perfect fit.

resident evil revelations 2These days, a lot of linear games leave me feeling bored. I wind up abandoning them before I get to the ending. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 resolves this by breaking its content up into small doses, leaving me wanting more. When I finish an episode and put down my controller, I know there are more mysteries to solve, and that keeps the game feeling fresh.

The way Revelations 2 limits the amount of content I can experience at one time makes it feel like a courtship. And I am in the mood to be wooed.

Add in the reasonable price point, and Capcom has a winning combination. I’d love to see Telltale games take a page from their playbook.
