Seasons after Fall Shouldn’t Remind Me of Sonic & Knuckles, But It Does

Seasons after FallSeasons after Fall is an upcoming indie platformer from the folks at Swing Swing Submarine. It includes an adorable fox character and what appears to be a season-shifting mechanic that allows you to swap between seasons (the trailer only shows winter and fall, but I’m told the final game will include all four seasons). It’s very interesting stuff.

But I can’t stop comparing it to Sonic & Knuckles.

See, when Seasons after Fall has its autumn moments, it reminds me of the autumn bits of Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles. Once my brain made that connection, it began concocting more detailed comparisons, like the fact that the fox is starting to remind me of Tails.

While this is farfetched so far, I will point out that both games include mushroom-riding:

Seasons after FallI’m not trying to say that the lovely people at Swing Swing Submarine are intentionally ripping off a game from the 16-bit era, nor am I even trying to imply that they may have done it subconsciously. After all, my comparisons are pretty flimsy.

But now that I’ve made this connection, I can’t stop seeing Seasons after Fall as this wonderful visual reference to Sonic & Knuckles.

Either way, check out the trailer. It’s super pretty, and I love the way they animated the fox’s arc as it jumps.
