The Binding of Isaac Is a Testament to the Magic of Video Games

The Binding of Isaac Is a Testament to the Magic of Video GamesDespite its cute exterior, The Binding of Isaac is shockingly dark. It has moments that will make even the most desensitized of gamers cringe. But that doesn’t concern Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen.

“[Isaac’s] themes are some of the darkest themes [I’ve] ever written and some of the darkest [I’ve] seen in games,” McMillen told a fan. “But the magic of video games glosses that over and allows you to get away with just about anything.”

That video game magic has certainly worked for The Binding of Isaac. People happily buy plush dolls and clothing that feature the title character. Some people have even gotten Isaac tattoos.

“That in itself is one of my biggest achievements,” McMillen added. “Making a naked abused dead child some kind of video game icon.”

Even though Isaac’s story may be grim, it’s nice to know McMillen’s has a happy ending.
