The Division Has the Best Trailer of E3 2014

The Division E3 2014Tom Clancy’s The Division has the best trailer of E3 2014, hands down. Pay attention, game studios. This is how it’s done.

When I saw the time-lapsed skyline, I was expecting another rote trailer in the vein of bad television. After Breaking Bad, this has become a simple way to show the passage of time without much investment in the particulars. And for the first few moments, this trailer doesn’t really stand out.

Then it takes shape and begins to become something much deeper, with more personal weight. Once I realized what was being shown, I immediately became caught up in whatever this was leading to.

It’s hard to describe the feelings I had while watching the slow-panning camera reveal the misery and tragedy that had befallen the people that once lived in this house. The weeks and months pile on top of each other so rapidly that it’s difficult to keep up. The voice over helps, but picking out all of the subtle details is daunting. Ultimately, it all leads to the sudden splatter of blood on the windowpane.

This is when everything comes into focus and we see what’s really at stake. Some people are willing to do anything to defend humanity, while others revel in the pleasure of torturing and eventually snuffing it out.

We still don’t know much about The Division, but what has been shown is fantastic. If the game can live up to the promise of this trailer, it could be something special.
