Trailer Sailor: Rack N Ruin and Total War: Attila

Total War: AttilaAhoy mateys! In today’s edition of Trailer Sailor, we have a bit of a dichotomy.  See, in one game, you attempt to save your people from a metaphorical hoard of demons; in the other, you literally are a demon. I set sail for the preview trailers for the newest Total War game, and a trailer for Rack N Ruin, a top-down action adventure game.

Let’s start with Total War: Attila:

I have to say, as a person without much Total War experience, this concept looks pretty sweet. I like that the series is exploring this period of history, and that the gameplay itself reflects the history of nomadic settlements — the moving of nomadic people as they migrate to better areas. It’s really a cool concept to see implemented in this particular genre, as usually these games are completely structured around settling and expanding one area. Total War is definitely getting better with each iteration.

And here’s Rack N Ruin:

I’m not going to beat around the bush here, I’m a huge fan of roguelike top-down games like The Binding of Isaac and Runers. There’s just something about the combination of exploration and chaos that really hits the sweet spot. Rack N Ruin also seems to have a lot of elements similar to Zelda and bullet-hell style shmups too, so that makes this even more mouth-watering. I’ll definitely be picking this up when it launches later this year.

So far 2015, is shaping up to be a solid year for games, especially on the PC front. Of course, there are plenty of interesting console games coming as well. A game like Rack N Ruin coming to PS4 is a pleasant surprise. Hopefully, the year has a few more surprises in store.
